Patrol is the backbone of policing. No other specialty unit can begin to do its job successfully without the foundational work of the patrol officer. Every sworn member of the CPD is a patrol officer and, therefore, is part of the patrol unit. Patrol is the largest and most valuable unit within any police department, and the Chambersburg Police Department is no different. Patrol is the first point of contact for the general public, and it affirms the strength of any law enforcement agency.
The Patrol Unit consists of (4) Squads. Each squad is made up of a Patrol Sergeant, Corporal, and several Patrolman. The Patrol Unit’s primary responsibility is to answer police calls, traffic enforcement, traffic safety and the protection of the public. The Patrol Unit patrols approximately 70 miles of roadways in an area of 6.6 square miles and handles on average over 17,000 calls for service per year.
